Ambien Dosage Guide
For decades, Valium and other drugs in the benzodiazepine family have been prescribed to help patients with anxiety or sleep disorders. Although both drugs work in similar ways, Lunesta and Ambien contain different ingredients. Not As Addiction-Free As Once Thought

Call your doctor if you still have worsened insomnia for the first few nights after you stop taking this medicine. Read all patient information, medication guides, and instruction sheets provided to you. Never take this medicine in larger amounts, or for longer than prescribed.
Is Ambien A Controlled Substance?
This medication should only be taken immediately before going to sleep. This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider alcohol withdrawal or pharmacist if you have questions. Do not open the pouch that contains the sublingual tablet (Intermezzo) until you are ready to take the tablet.

Be sure to take your dose with at least 7–8 hours remaining before you need to wake up. This is to lower your risk of certain side effects, such as sleepiness and impaired driving the day after you take Ambien. The immediate-release forms are Ambien, Edluar, and Zolpimist, which are used to help you fall asleep. Intermezzo, is used to help you fall back to sleep if you wake up in the middle of the night and then have trouble sleeping. The extended-release form of zolpidem is Ambien CR which has a first layer that dissolves quickly to help you fall asleep, and a second layer that dissolves slowly to help you stay asleep. The recommended dose of AMBIEN in these patients is 5 mg once daily immediately before bedtime [see Warnings and Precautions (5.2), Use in Specific Populations (8.5)].
You may report side effects to FDA at FDA-1088 or at /medwatch. Remember that this medication has been prescribed because your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Drugs such as Ambien (zolpidem) reportedly induce this side effect more than benzodiazepines do. So much so, that the terms “Z-drug Zombie” or “Ambien Zombie” are in common usage. As a prescription sleep aid, Ambien serves the legitimate medical purpose of helping people overcome the effects of insomnia.
Once a drug is approved by the FDA, the DEA then determines if a drug should be scheduled under the Controlled Substances Act, and which Schedule to place it in. Schedule IV drugs have a lower potential for abuse relative to other drugs in Schedule III (for example, codeine or buprenorphine) but can still be abused.

Avoid AMBIEN use in patients with severe hepatic impairment as it may contribute to encephalopathy [see Warnings and Precautions (5.8), Use in Specific Populations (8.7), Clinical Pharmacology (12.3)]. If you suddenly stop using this medication, you may have withdrawal symptoms (such as nausea, vomiting, flushing, stomach cramps, nervousness, shakiness).
Your doctor can discuss your concerns with you and suggest other treatment options if your current Ambien dosage isn’t working for you. The starting dosage of Ambien CR in females is 6.25 mg taken once daily. The starting dosage of Ambien CR in males is either 6.25 mg or 12.5 mg once daily. Your doctor will likely start you on a low dosage and adjust it over time to reach the right amount for you.
Tell your doctor if you feel an increased urge to use more of this medicine. Never use zolpidem in larger amounts, or for longer than prescribed. If you’re taking generic low-dose sublingual tablets, you shouldn’t drive or do activities that require alertness without getting at least 4 more hours of sleep after taking it.
